Company background
Playtech is one of the oldest and largest gambling software companies. It was founded in 1999 in Tartu, Estonia, by Israeli entrepreneur Teddy Sagi, together with partners from the casino, software engineering and multimedia industries. It launched its first casino product in 2001 and floated on London's AIM market in March 2006. Today Playtech plc is listed on the London Stock Exchange and is part of the FTSE 250 index. Sagi sold his remaining shares in November 2018.
Playtech's business covers far more than slots. Over the years it has supplied software for online casino, poker (the iPoker network), bingo (the Virtue Fusion platform), sports betting, live dealer games and more. A lot of its growth came from acquisitions. Several slot studios joined the group this way:
- Ash Gaming: founded in 2002, acquired in 2011
- Psiclone Games: Lichfield, UK, founded in 2007, acquired in 2014
- Quickspin: a Swedish slots studio, acquired in 2016
- Eyecon: founded in Brisbane in 1997, acquired in 2017, maker of Fluffy Favourites
Playtech says it now has eight global content studios, a portfolio of over 1,000 games, and 60+ new releases every year. Its other studios include Playtech Origins, Rarestone, Reel Web and Logic Labs.
We don't list licence numbers on this page. For current licensing details, check the relevant regulator's public register.
Notable Playtech games and series
- Age of the Gods: A suite based on Greek and Roman mythology that Playtech says has been a top performer since 2016. Every game in the suite gives a chance at one of four jackpots (subject to local rules). The brand has also been extended to live casino, poker and bingo.
- Fire Blaze: Launched in 2019 and built around a "Hold and Respin" feature, with titles like Blue Wizard and Sky Queen. Sister brands include Mega Fire Blaze, Fire Blaze Golden and Fire Blaze Quattro.
- Collect 'Em: A suite where a special symbol both awards on-reel cash prizes and sets the number of free games.
- Branded slots: Playtech has licensing deals with major studios, and its branded titles include The Walking Dead, Gladiator, The Mummy, Rocky, Gold Rush and Breaking Bad.
We haven't listed RTP figures because we couldn't confirm them on official Playtech pages during research.
What Playtech games are known for
- Jackpot networks. Playtech says its jackpot network has more than 80 games. It describes the Age of the Gods jackpot as the industry's first jackpot available across several product types.
- Big branded licences. Film and TV tie-ins are a long-standing part of the catalogue.
- Several studios. With eight studios, the catalogue mixes classic retail-style slots, maths-led games and modern feature slots.
- Operator tools. Playtech supplies the technology behind many casino platforms, so its catalogue is designed to plug into operator promotions and loyalty tools.
Mobile and HTML5
Playtech says its content works "across all channels and devices" and includes fully native, customisable casino apps for operators. Its games run in mobile browsers and in operator apps on licensed platforms.
