Microgaming and Games Global: what happened?
For most of its history, "Microgaming" was the name on a huge catalogue of online slots and progressive jackpots. Founded on the Isle of Man in 1994, it was one of the earliest companies in online casino software.
That changed in 2022. In November 2021, Microgaming agreed to sell its distribution business (Quickfire) and its online games portfolio, including its progressive jackpot titles, to a new company called Games Global Limited. The sale closed in early May 2022 after regulatory approval. Games Global took over the back catalogue of exclusive games and a customer network that, at the time of the deal, operated more than 900 gaming brands.
Games Global was founded in early 2021 and is backed by private capital. At launch it was led by CEO Walter Bugno, formerly of IGT and Lottomatica, and CFO Tim Mickley, formerly of SafeCharge and Playtech.
Microgaming kept running after the sale, but as a different business. It said it would focus on platform systems and services, including for Games Global and its customers, and would keep licensing its own sports betting software. In 2024, as it marked 30 years in business, Microgaming rebranded its corporate website and said it was returning "to its roots" as a platform software and technology provider rather than a content aggregator.
In short: the slots most people call "Microgaming slots" are now owned and distributed by Games Global. Microgaming itself now focuses on platform technology.
